Spiti Valley - The Best Travel Destination in Himachal Pradesh
Spiti valley is one of the most mesmerizing travel destinations in India. The natural beauty in Spiti is unlike no other place in India except Ladakh. This amazing travel destination is situated in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is one of the most remote places in India. The complete district of Lahaul and Spiti becomes inaccessible in winters due to heavy snowfall. In winters the temperature in Lahaul and Spiti sometimes goes down to – 30 to – 40 degree Celsius. Most inhabitants of the valley come down to other parts of the state due to these extreme living conditions. The natural beauty of this place attracts visitors from everywhere inspite of all the harsh conditions.

Let's Plan Your Trip to Spiti Valley!
We'll need the below info to help you better.
What is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?
In winters there is heavy snowfall in Spiti valley. Lahaul & Spiti are connected with the Kunzum Pass which gets 15-20 feet of snow in winters. Due to this, Lahaul gets completely disconnected from Spiti and rest of the Himachal during this time. Even Spiti Valley gets disconnected from the popular route through Manali. Therefore via Shimla is the only way to reach Spiti in winters and that is only with the help of 4 x 4 vehicles. Only recently it has been connected to the town of Manali via a 9 km long Rohtang tunnel. Also during rainy season, the area becomes prone to landslides and minor road blocks. Due to these extreme weather conditions, the best time to visit Lahaul and Spiti is from 1st May to 15th July & 1st Oct to 15th Nov. However, we organize Spiti Valley tours throughout the year, even during extreme harsh winters on Spiti.
What to expect on a Spiti trip ?
Lahaul and Spiti is not a place to expect regular tourist crowds and party atmosphere. This is the place you come to find peace and raw nature. Due to the harsh living conditions luxury hotels and smooth roads are not available in Spiti. There are a few good quality deluxe hotels available but the accommodation costs are high due to limited resources.
Another thing that you’ll find in all over this valley would be compost toilets and water resources are limited in the district.
Should I take my own vehicle for the trip? What type of vehicles can be taken to Spiti?
If you are experienced in driving in hilly areas and off road terrain then sure. However, if you do not have any experience in hilly areas then we recommend hiring a professional driver. Vehicles with high ground clearance are recommended as the roads are in bad conditions at many places. We recommend vehicles with a high ground clearance or this terrain as the roads are in poor conditions at some of the places. How to reach Spiti valley?
There are two routes by which you can reach this heaven. One is via Shimla and the other is via Manali. The Shimla route is a little longer but covers Kinnaur district as well. Also, during winters the Manali route is closed, so Shimla route is the only way to reach Spiti depending on road and snow conditions. Manali route is the shorter one and more preferred by travellers. The details on both these routes can be found in this article: How to reach Spiti valley? – A brief guide.
